Generac 6866 iQ2000 Inverter Portable Generator Review

Generac 6866 iQ2000 Inverter Portable Generator

The Generac 6866 iQ2000 has been described as quiet, compact and light in weight. This product is often compared to Honda EU2000i, the higher-end portable inverter generator. Both are CARB/EPA 50 state compliant. In this article, we will discuss the features of the gas powered portable generator, along with some pros and cons.

With 1600 watts of continuous power, it can handle various small items. If you plan to use it to handle your refrigerator/freezer in a power outage, then you should know that this model puts out a maximum of 2000 watts. While most refrigerators require 700-800 watts to run, the start wattage can be more than 2000. Be sure the peak or starting watts of this machine can accommodate yours.

Powered by an 80cc, 4-stroke OHV engine, it has been advertised to be able to operate up to 7.7 hours at 25% load. Fuel tank capacity is 1.06 gallon. In terms of fuel efficiency, Honda is the winner. With a fuel tank capacity of 0.95 gal, it can provide 8.1 hours runtime at 1/4 load. However, the iQ2000 costs less.

In case you need more power, you can buy a parallel connecting accessory kit. It will let you hook up another unit next to it. The power output will increase to 3200/4000, giving you lots of versatility. The optional parallel kit for this model, GNA6877, costs around $150.

The iQ2000 comes with low-oil level shutdown feature to safeguard engine from damage. It also has an indicator light that will tell you when the engine is low on oil. In addition to the low oil LED, located on the control panel you can find an overheat LED and an overload LED.

The bells and whistles are pretty good for a generator in this price range. The start, run, and stop functions are integrated into one power dial. Three modes of operation are availble. There is a switch for turbo, standard and economy usage. Loads with minimal output requirements are can be operated in economy mode. The turbo mode is designed for loads that require a higher demand output such as power drills or saws.

The economy mode of course will give the quietest operation. Generac does not list the decibel (noise) rating of this portable inverter. That being said, its noise lovel (at 50% load) has been advertised to be lower than Honda. The Honda EU2000I is 53 db at 1/4 of a load and 59 db at rated load, much quieter than a conventional generator.

Generac 6866 iQ2000 Dashboard

Reviewers generally have been pleased with its easy to use user interface. The front control panel has LED indicators that show you the status of power usage, fuel level, and estimated run time that shows you how much time you have left before it runs out. The power bar that displays the amount of power being used is divided into segments. It also has a LED that shows the status of the generator.

Like any other portable power source, this 2K inverter is not perfect. There is no automatic start, no 12V battery charging function, and no USB output. With a single 120 VAC duplex receptacle, it is really designed to power minimal power devices. Despite some limitations and negative views, the majority of reviewers have found that this unit fulfills their expectations.

When it comes to portable generator, dealing with oil is almost always a messy job. That being said, reviewers have found that add oil to the engine is a simple task. The oil port is easy to access and no tools are required to open or close it. The generator also includes the oil needed.

Although it does not provide an electric starting system, reviewers have reported that starting the engine is fast and easy. Not only that, they have also been pleased for the fact that this little generator is very easy to use. The clear instructions and the labeled controls make it ideal to someone who knows nothing about generators.

Weighing over 50 pounds when filled with fuel and oil, it is moderately heavy. However, the weight is about the same as the Honda (45.6 lb dry weight), pretty light weight for a 2k generator. Furthermore, customer feedback indicates that the build quality is not the weak point of this portable inverter.

Possibly the most impressive aspect of the 2000W inverter is its relatively low noise level. This definitely is an important aspect for those living close to other people. While it is not completely silent, it is not super noisy either.

The Generac iQ2000 may or may not be the right product for you. Having said that, if you are looking for a little generator for casual outdoor power needs, then it is worth considering. The similar Honda unit may be better in some aspects but it is several hundred dollars more.
